Great device, but build quality improvements needed.

Great device, but build quality improvements needed.
Great device, but build quality improvements needed. My unit showed up with a strip of dead "pixels" across the bottom of the screen (reference photos). I ordered a second unit to replace the defective one. If there's issues with that as well, I'll drop the Digital Paper rating to one star. I'm too busy to deal with quality control issues and this is unacceptable SNY. The device is suppose to make my life more seamless. A defective device is an inconvenience and a hassle. I prefer e-ink over over iPad Pro's backlit display and the Digital Paper is much more functional as a notepad than the iPad pro. However, I'll return the Digital Paper for the iPad Pro if build quality and functionality becomes an issue during the return period. As a student, the device functionality is excellent. It replaces all of my clunky folders and I have a lightweight notepad/paper system...I suggest SNY stop charging a premium for non-premium hardware. If you want us to pay premium prices, give us premium materials... most people don't perceive your products as premium in modern times. You can't charge a premium for mediocre materials and expect a positive outcome/experience from consumers. The screen is plastic, not a flexible glass substrate... durability in terms of resilience to scratches doesn't seem promising. I've read plenty on the forums now about permanent scratches on screens from regular usage of the digital pen. Also, not much adhesive holds the screen in place, so corners popping out is a potential (as other customers have reported). The 1st generation seems to be a much better build quality other than having a plastic screen as well.Be aware that tips break off VERY easily in the digital pen. When this happens, you will spend roughly $80 to have it replaced... nubs wear out quickly (1-2 weeks) and a 10 pack is $20 to replace those tips. The digital pen does not come with any form of protection/case.The cover, it's nothing more than piece of felt cardboard, magnets and a sticky pad... what a joke at $60.The packaging the Digital Paper shows up in is nothing more than a flimsy (very thin) cardboard box with printing on it. Very exciting... shows me that SNY really cares about this product and the consumer's initial impressions (sarcasm).I feel that SNY went as cheap as possible on quality and charged the max they felt they could get away with... great as most companies do. I don't mind the premium price, just give me a premium experience... take notes from Apple, then perhaps you may rise up to be the great company you once were SNY. People notice when you cut corners... this what makes companies fail / flop. Like your e-readers, there is so much potential here, but treating this as a specialty/niche segment when there is so much potential and possible demand will make it fail... Like Amazon stealing the e-reader market and concept from you, someone may do the same with the Digital Paper if you continue to cripple it with a mediocre presentation, experience and build quality... uh hmmm... ReMark_able.---------------------------------------followup:I forgot to mention the software is rather basic and gets the job done; It's excellent for what the Digital Paper is intended to do. I wish it were easier to organize files on the Digital Paper, but syncing with the computer software takes care of that. I purchased and compared this to the ipad_pro 13.3" for college courses and the ipad_ can't touch the digital paper in terms of syncing with a pre-existing folder with PDF files... tried notability, evernote, etc. The Digital Paper does an excellent job handling PDFs.One stand out feature for me is the ability to link a notepad notes to a PDF file in the side by side view to take notes on PDF/pre-existing notes, articles etc. The iPad,while having more features, was such a headache trying to simply sync files with my Google Drive. The Digital Paper does it flawlessly every time.-------------followup 2 January 22, 2018Well, I decided to return the Digital Paper (My second unit, the first came with a defective screen if you didn't read that part). The device is seriously lacking in durability. The screen is only held on by less than adequate double-sided adhesive foam and lifts up very easily. I really wanted to like this device a lot and I'm disappointed this is the only option in the market that works as well as the Digital Paper does. As a student, I don't believe the Digital Paper would survive the daily travels in a backpack, public transportation, car travel and the classroom. The Digital Paper is only worth about $200 in my opinion due to how fragile it is. The Digital Paper is for people who can devote full time care and attention to the device. Me, I opted for the 13.3" iPad to keep up with my PDF needs... I will seriously be missing the e-ink display, ability to "print to Digital Paper from my desktop" and sync with pre-existing folders on my desktop/laptop. The iPad display is ok, but mediocre compared to the Digital Paper for my uses in terms on long periods of studying / writing w/tons of glare and washout from overhead lighting in the library. The Digital Paper felt nicer to write on compared to the iPad, but my handwriting was much more legible on the iPad.The battery life I got for classroom use was just over one day... meaning I would have to charge it midday the following day. Also, the digital pen isn't the most accurate and occasionally mine would randomly jump and become erratic on the screen when trying to write. There is no battery indicator on for the stylus, but a low battery indicator for the pen will pop up on the digital paper when it's nearing its demise. If Sony decides to actually fully commit to the Digital Paper in its third generation, I'll definitely consider getting one. Sony needs to really get the word out and market this device instead being so half-hearted. If they don't push it, I hope another company does. I'd recommend this device for any and every student if not for the lack of durability and high price (iPad cost me significantly more with accessories and Apple Care coverage). Ultimately, I chose the ipad 12.9" for durability, dependability and product support of the Apple Pencil and iPad Pro... I wasn't confident in the Digital Paper and the second unit I had was exhibiting issues as well (poor battery life and stylus being erratic as mentioned).

The DPT-RP1 is absolutely perfect for reading and annotating PDF documents. I LOVE this thing! I’m going to update with a thorough review after a few more days, but my initial impressions after two days of use is that this is the device I’ve been dreaming of for years. More to come...

      Additional update: **DURABLE**!! (12/17)

In a rather tragic accident, I tripped and fell recently. My laptop bag, containing my Sony Digital Paper and laptop went flying into the street, and the edge of the bag was run over by a car. The Digital Paper fills the bag, so it was unquestionably run over. Despite some minor damage to the case edge, my digital paper still works perfectly. My laptop, on the other hand, was obliterated. I'm amazed. If I could add 5 more stars, I would.

Updated review: (few days after purchase)

After several days of use, this device has already become indispensible for me.

As a full time employee managing budgets, workflows, and supervising employees, this device is great - it keeps every document I need organized and accessible. The ability to print directly to the device is huge boon to my productivity. My work also relies heavily on an inordinate amount of technical manuals. This works really well for those, and the search function is extremely quick. As an aside, the acknowledgement that Sony is planning to add jump to page and table of contents functionality is something that I'm really glad to hear about, as this helps with navigation in large documents. As a workaround for the timebeing - the searchable symbols work well, and I purchased a one month subscription to Adobe Acrobat Pro to create chapter hyperlinks in the larger PDF files that lack them. There is probably a free pdf software that allows for this until the firmware update adds jump to page and TOC navigation, but Adobe Acrobat Pro on a monthly subscription basis is worth it. That said, you really could get away with using the searchable star/asterix symbols until the firmware update is released.

As a graduate student, on top of fulltime work, this is a life saver. I use it for both textbooks and the inordinate amount of articles I read. The ability to have side notes for each document has been really useful to synthesize the notes I take in my textbooks. The pen works so much better than I expected - it's a great writing experience. The highlight button is a little high on the pen for really comfortable heavy highlighter use (the ability to switch button functions could be a useful firmware update), but the highlighting and erase buttons are a breeze to use. You'll probably want to stock up on pen nibs since they do wear down over time.

I have the digital paper app on both my home and work computers, and you can set different sync folders on each device, which is really handy. I'm mostly syncing from my OneDrive sync folder on my home PC, and it syncs all of the subfolders flawlessly (while skipping any that don't have PDFs).

I used an Ipad for several years, and was never able to focus for extended periods the way I can with this device. The screen glare was annoying and I switched to other apps too easily with the Ipad. This device really lets me focus in an unobstructed and massively more productive way. The large screen makes a huge difference over smaller eInk devices I own (including a 9.7 inch device) - there really isn't a comparison. It's a great reading and writing experience. I honestly expected to be disappointed - I really did - but I'm pretty blown away by this device (and I'm a pretty critical consumer).

I've added my entire PDF ebook collection (several hundred items), and some unexpected great use cases I've found are my cookbooks and foreign language textbooks and workbooks. The ability to erase your answers in workbooks makes them infinitely re-usable, which is awesome. If you buy your ebooks in PDF format, they look great on this device.

I have over 3,000 documents loaded, including lots of large image heavy 400+mb pdf files. This handles them perfectly and is shockingly fast.

Honestly, this is the best purchase/investment I've made in years.

As an academic I think this is a wonderful device. I don't really get why Sony does not open this market to Europe, I'm sure this would work very well, especially in academia.
Nevertheless it can be enhanced in several ways. I've been using it for about a week now, mainly reading PDF files, highlighting, coding text and making notes. So here are my pros and cons for now.

      +
perfect screen size for paper reading
able to read notes made previously in Adobe
jump from in-text citation to bibliography (but sadly not back to where you were)
      light weight, easy to transport
      long battery life
good for highlighting, making short notes
Adobe highlighted areas sync with DPT highlights
I enjoy the simplicity of the device: no apps, just read

      -
      what bothers me most:
fifty percent of the time I have to swipe three times before the page actually turns, the screen is not responsive
writing is a lot slower than I expected
there is only one folder with documents, sub-folders are not visible on the device
      other issues:
the top part (with the home button) was slightly wrinkled when I received the device
I received an incompatible USB cable in the package
calibrating pen does only work for horizontal writing, writing vertically works poorly (because of the different position), furthermore when I'm in a sofa for example, the position is different and it doesn't work as well
pc connection interferes with VPN connection
the tip leaves stains on the screen once it's worn of (after one week in my case, which I believe is quite fast)

In conclusion, I love the device, I like to work with it, it does the trick in my line of work. But this is a pricey device so I was quite disappointed with the issues that I have been experiencing (they seem quite basic and should have been resolved before releasing the device).
I'll be experimenting some more (compatibility with NVIVO etc.) and am curious about other user experiences and about Sony's responses to the above downsides that have also been signaled by other users.

If this and the Remarkable had a child together we’d have a perfect device. Basically all this is missing is web storage. I understand it from the security perspective so that is fine. Once I got used to file management I like it. The one thing I really miss is I can’t move files to other folders on the device. But the NFC works fine for my iPhone so I just have to quick connect the phone and I can do file management.

I will say that the reviewer that lost files taught me something. It does NOT automatically back up files on the computer. However, manually creating a backup is easy. I’m doing that as I write this to avoid the same fate as that reviewer.

This is awesome for academic/professional reading and notes. I also have a Remarkable for daily notes because of the web storage. I really prefer the 13 inch screen for academic reading.

Overall, the Sony feels much more polished and elegant than the Remarkable. I was always a fan of the Sony ereaders back in the day as they were much more elegant than kindles. Unfortunately the clunky store was a failure. I think the clunky file management on this is unnecessarily holding it back. If Sony could have the same talent in software development as they have in hardware development they’d do much better!

The Sony cover for this is perfect, it seems pricey but it’s worth it as it perfectly matches the reader.

It’s an excellent equipment for academic work, away from the distractions of emails/internet. It pairs up very well with my laptop and it works smoothly for giving online seminars and online teaching (essential in the Covid-19 era). The red colour ink is especially useful for making comments on dissertations and for marking/grading students work. The only negative point is the high price.
