The passing of Robin Williams was a loss that seemed to affect many people on a personal level. We see the loss of many public figures but in this case it seemed to hit a little closer to home as Robin Williams seemed like someone we all knew. We all have favorite movies of his and have ones that are part of our regular “go to” movies.
It is hard to make sense of the loss of someone who brought so much joy to millions but comfort and encouragement can be found in some of his own words from his movies. His characters words of wisdom don’t need much explanation as in the movie situations, as it is in real life, they come right when needed.
Though he had hundred of memorable quotes here are seven of the best that can help with finding some peace and encouragement in any tough times.
You’ll have bad times, but it’ll always wake you up to the good stuff you weren’t paying attention to.
Good Will Hunting
Probably my favorite movie of his and a nice reminder to count your blessings
I love you without knowing how, or when, or from where. I love you straightforwardly without complexities or pride. I love you because I know no other way than this. So close that your hand, on my chest, is my hand. So close, that when you close your eyes, I fall asleep.
Patch Adams
This provides such an insight into pure unconditional love. A comforting reminder of the true love that we are able to feel for one another.
I try to make sense of things. Which is why, I guess, I believe in destiny. There must be a reason I am as I am. There must be.
Bicentennial Man
Bicentennial Man is not known as one of the classic movies and faces its fair share of ridicule but there is a certain vulnerability in this line that despite the nature of the character provides a real human connection.
The human spirit is more powerful than any drug and that is what needs to be nourished: with work, play, friendship and family. These are the things that matter
Awakenings
Another lesser known Williams movie that is definitely worth a watch. This quote is a nice reminder that there exists a variable of elements that help us make up a meaningful existence.
Carpe diem. Seize the day, boys. Makes your lives extraordinary
Dead Poets Society
Probably THE classic Robin Williams quote from one of his finest works. It’s almost impossible to not run across this quote on a daily basis and it provides great motivation.
If there’s love, dear…those are the ties that bind, and you’ll have a family in your heart, forever. All my love to you, poppet. You’re going to be alright. Bye bye.
Mrs Doubtfire
Fun fact: Robin Williams improvised so much during the filming of Mrs. Doubtfire that when they started cutting it all together they had 4 entirely different movies each with a different level of movie rating. This quote is a great reminder of the power of family and ultimately of love.
Please, don’t worry so much. Because in the end none of us has very long on this earth. Life is fleeting. And if you’re ever distressed, cast your eyes to the summer sky when the stars are strung across the velvety night. And when a shooting star streaks through the blackness, turning night into day, make a wish, and think of me. Make your life spectacular.
Jack
Depression is a very real thing and if it can take down someone like Robin Williams it shows how devastating this disease can be. It is estimated that 121 million people worldwide suffer from depression and the days of just calling it the “blues” are long gone.
Depression can affect anyone: male or female, young or old, rich or poor. Depression is not a weakness and not speaking up about it can only delay the ability to get help and get on the path to real wellness.
The National Institute of Mental Health can help in becoming more educated about depression whether it is affecting yourself or someone you care about.
